Description
In 2025, UNC Health launched a comprehensive, system-wide Fast Pass Optimization initiative to align all departments with Epic best practice standards and maximize the tool’s performance. While Fast Pass had been in use since 2018 with incremental improvements, this year’s initiative marked a strategic shift toward standardization, transparency, and efficiency at scale.
The effort began with a multi-month Fast Pass Audit designed to identify configuration gaps, non-compliant builds, and missed opportunities across the enterprise. This data-driven assessment laid the foundation for targeted remediation, in which departments were “right-sized” through manual review, build adjustments, and iterative testing to ensure alignment with performance benchmarks.
The final phase focused on training, adoption, and enhanced communication. UNC Health developed centralized SharePoint resources, training hubs, new educational materials, and implemented Hello World 2-way texting for Fast Pass offers. This enhancement improved the patient experience by enabling direct SMS responses to appointment offers—simplifying the process and increasing patient engagement.
UNC Health achieved a 53% increase in average Fast Pass offers, reflecting significant improvements in operational efficiency, patient access, and schedule optimization.
