Description

High-value care is defined as “the best care for patients, with optimal results for the circumstances, delivered at the right price”.1,2 This means quality care balances potential benefits of interventions against harms while considering cost as a significant factor in the medical decision-making. It is a practice that each physician should implement every encounter. However, high healthcare costs and poor health outcomes in the United States have been some of the most significant barriers to physicians and residents using this method. An excellent technique to overcome these barriers is to help make physicians and residents aware of the cost of care, such as laboratory tests and procedures, to avoid ordering low-value tests, and to prescribe medications cost-effectively. We hypothesize that this add-on will challenge the provider to practice better high-value care by consequently ordering only what is necessary during that visit. Also, we expect a decrease in the average cost per clinical visit for patients, which will reduce overall hospital costs.
