Description
In response to new CMS regulatory requirements around data collection for Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) and Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) procedures, Duke Health developed a robust workflow to maximize completion rates of HOOS/KOOS patient-reported outcome (PRO) questionnaires and related data. These measures are tied to Medicare reimbursement, with penalties for insufficient data submission.
An interdisciplinary team collaborated to design a multi-touchpoint strategy that reaches patients through MyChart notifications, text messaging, phone calls from care team members, and in-person clinic visits. Duke health leveraged Epic-released tools—including a checklist, texting, welcome iPads and kiosk workflows, and a reporting framework—to support data collection and submission to CMS.
This presentation will highlight Duke’s implementation strategy, early outcomes, and practical lessons learned to help other institutions prepare for upcoming CMS deadlines.
